Precast concrete crib retaining walls were originally developed in New Zealand where there was a requirement for a retaining wall that did not crack when constructed in areas where earth movements may be encountered. Over a period of some years, variations in the components of the crib system have been developed to suit production, construction techniques and specific local requirements with the aim of achieving cost benefits to all.

Crib retaining walls are gravity retaining walls, constructed from interlocking precast concrete components. They can be used wherever a retaining wall is needed – including building sites, driveways and garden areas. The high quality precast concrete components provide for long-term durability and will not rot or warp. The spaces in the face of the crib wall can be planted with flowers, shrubs or creepers. This allows the wall to blend in with any existing or proposed environment. Furthermore, they can easily be adapted to accommodate convex and concave curves.

UCBC can design and install gabion retaining walls, rock mattresses, rock blankets and rip rap for flood and scour protection. UCBC recently installed gabions to construct a retention basin at Aus Post in Chullora for ADCO. UCBC can also install structural gabion retaining walls and decorative gabion walls such as the wall at Masters Hoxton Park which contains vintage aviation memorabilia.

The Keystone retaining wall system is robust and strong, available in standard and flush face finishes ideal for both straight and curved walls. The patented interlocking pin connecting system is best suited for engineered walls up to 15 metres in height.

Available in charcoal, almond and natural colours, keystone blocks are durable, versatile, blend into the environmental landscape, have a strong strength to weight ratio and allow for design creativity.

Block-work retaining walls are used in a broad range of projects due to their high design load capabilities. UCBC are competent installers of steel reinforced blockwork walls.

UCBC’s strong relationships with masonry, steel and concrete suppliers help UCBC to provide a turnkey solution for blockwork retaining walls. Services available include footing excavation, scheduling, ordering and placing of steel, procurement of concrete and pumping services if required right through to laying blocks, rendering and certification.

UCBC have constructed this type of retaining wall for RMS highway work at Picton for Burton Contractors, Fairwater Avenue sub division for TRN and within an Electrical Sub-station for Transgrid and Alstom in Greystanes.
